Kalamazoo First Assembly of God
5550 Oakland Drive, Portage, MI 49024
The Kfirst Community Garden is a community outreach of the Kfirst Assembly of God. This compassion ministry is composed of volunteers who plant, tend, harvest and give away fresh, seasonal, high-quality, chemical-free produce to help meet the needs of those who are food insecure in the Kalamazoo area. We do not give food to individuals, but to non-profits who already have procedures in place to deem who is needy. In our inaugural year of 2012, we were able to give away approximately 3,000 pounds of food. Each subsequent year, that amount has increased. Our total production of fresh, high-quality produce given away as of the end of the 2014 season is 6.4 tons.
The Kfirst Community Garden, planted with the Back to Eden method, occupies 60' x 80' area on the South side of Kfirst. Our Garden consists of 6 fruit trees, 22 fruit bushes and 33 assorted vegetable beds and rhubarb. Our volunteers are church and community members who serve under the direction of a team of volunteer coordinators. Those who serve have an opportunity to share a small portion of the harvest.
We welcome interested volunteers to join us and are happy to give Garden tours. The Garden is typically open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the morning during the growing season. Donations of seedlings, produce seed packets, and onion sets in the fall are appreciated.
